Saltwater Salmon Fishing, Port Hardy, British Columbia
Tides & Tales Sport Fishing Adventures' Mike Kelly grew up fly fishing along the banks of the Bow River in Calgary and switched his focus from trout to salmon when he moved to the coast in the late 1990's. Tides & Tales fly fish for coho beginning mid-August, casting and buck tailing baitfish imitations to hungry silver salmon. You may also have the opportunity to catch chinook, sockeye or pink salmon on the fly while targeting coho. This is a very exciting fishery as the angler has the rod in their had when the fish strikes. As the hits are usually near the surface, polarized sunglasses often allow you to see the salmon as it follows and attacks the fly.
While out on the water, you could also do some bottom fishing for halibut, lingcod or snapper. Another option is to experience off-shore fishing for albacore tuna. The tuna fishery is very weather and current dependent so the guides will not know if this option is available until just prior to the fishing day. Let your guide know if you are interested in either of these options.
