T.G. Special Ops

T.G. Special Ops
While the T.G Special Ops may look like just another generic nymph, it is actually constructed of a number of materials that when combined have proven to be very attractive to fish. First, the pale orange bead acts as a subtle attractor as well as ensuring that the fly gets into the strike zone fast. Second, the general shape of the fly mimics a vast array of aquatic insect life and therefore is on every fish’s menu. Finally, the flash that is incorporated into the fly makes it highly visible but in a life-like manner which helps to ensure it gets eaten. This easy to tie fly is a very effective generalist nymph pattern that works great for feeding the numerous trout, grayling and whitefish species found throughout Alberta and Montana.

Materials
Hook: Tiemco TMC 2457, size 14
Thread: UTC 140 – tan
Bead: Pale orange tungsten bead – 7/64” (2.8 mm) (Available from Pieroway Rod Company)
Tail: Pheasant tail fibers
Rib: UTC ultra wire small - gold
Body: Super Fine dry fly dubbing – tan
Legs: Krystal Flash – medium brown
Thorax: Hare’s Ice Dub – hare’s ear

Tying Instructions
Step 1. Thread the bead onto the hook and then insert the hook into the vise.
Step 2. Attach the thread and wrap down to the mid point of the hook.
Step 3. Tie down six pheasant tail fibers so that they extend one hook gap length off the back of the hook. Trim the excess butt ends.
Step 4.Wrap the thread forward to the point just behind the bead binding down a 2” length of gold wire in the process. Return wrap the thread back over the wire and pheasant tail fibers stopping at the tail/body junction.
Step 5. Twist a pinch of Super Fine dry fly dubbing onto the thread and proceed to wrap forward to the bead resulting in a tight, thinly dubbed body along the length of the hook.
Step 6. Spiral wrap the gold wire in equal segments up the body and tie off behind the bead.
Step 7. Return wrap the thread down the hook 1/3 of the hook length. Bind down four krystal flash legs on each side of the body and trim to the same length as the body.
Step 8. Twist a pinch of hare’s ear Ice Dub onto the thread and wrap forward creating a bulky thorax that ends directly behind the bead.
Step 9. Whip finish and carefully apply a small amount of head cement to the exposed thread wraps on the collar of the fly. If needed, pluck out some of the Ice Dub fibers to give the thorax a spikey appearance.

Your T.G. Special Ops is now complete and you are ready to head out On The Water!
