Invented by Blue Quill Angler guide and fly-tier Bob Dye, and named after the beer brand, the PBR Midge larva pattern is a great choice when winter nymph fishing on your favorite trout river.
According to Bob, the key to this fly’s success is the little red tag on the end, which he believes triggers a reactive strike from the fish.
In order to realistically replicate a midge larva you will want to tie this fly small; typically size 18-26.

Step 2b.
Return wrap the thread back behind the bead.
Step 3.
Tie in a 2” long piece of tinsel, making sure to leave the red thread tag of three or four wraps exposed. Return wrap the thread behind the bead making sure to maintain the body taper.
Step 4.
Palmer wrap the tinsel up behind the bead, overlapping each wrap slightly.
Step 5.
Tie off the tinsel and clip the excess.
Step 6a. Lightly dub the thread.
Step 6b.
Make three wraps right behind the bead.
Step 7.
Whip finish behind the bead. Do not cement the thread wraps as the adhesive liquid tends to run into the dubbing and gum it up.
