Non-Descript Terrestrial (NDT)
Created in response to the need for an impressionistic micro-terrestrial pattern, this fly works well when fish are in still or running water and are feeding on beetles, winged ants, midges, small crickets and hoppers and even caddis. Trout, whitefish and grayling really seem to like this fly.
This pattern uses only a few materials, making it a quick and simple fly to tie. The original pattern used a CDC wing for flotation. However, substituting EP Trigger Point fibers (which are treated at the factory with Water Shed) makes for a longer floating, more durable and easier to tie fly.
Tying this pattern in sizes 14-20 will ensure that you have a variety of options to match various micro-terrestrial insects no matter where you are fishing.
Materials
Hook: Tiemco TMC 100 - size 18
Thread: UTC Ultra 70 – black
Abdomen: Peacock herl
Wing: EP Trigger Point fibers – blue winged olive
Thorax: Ice Dub – peacock
Adhesive: Zap-A-Gap brush on and Pieroway premium head cement
Tying Instructions
Step 1.
Insert the hook in the vise and attach the thread at the 1/3 point behind the hook eye.
Step 2a.
Wrap the thread back to the rear of the hook and then return wrap to the tie in point, building an even thread base.
Step 2b.
Coat the thread base with Zap-A-Gap.
Step 3a.
Tie in a piece of peacock herl.
Step 3b.Tightly palmer wrap the peacock herl forward to the 1/3 point of the hook. (note: wrapping the peacock herl over a bed of Zap-A-Gap will significantly increase its durability. However, you will need to wait until the glue dries before you touch the peacock herl or it will become a glued-up mess).
Step 3c.
Clip away the excess peacock herl and advance the thread to the eye of the hook.
Step 4a.
Wrap a sparse bundle of EP Trigger Point fibers around the thread, double it over and tie it down so that the fibers extend back over the top of the peacock herl abdomen.
Step 4b.
Clip the excess fibers so they extend slightly past the hook bend.
Step 5.
Dub a spikey thorax of Ice Dub, making sure not to crowd the hook eye.
Step 6.
Wrap a small thread head, whip finish and cement.
Your NDT is now complete and you are ready to head out On The Water!
