Sight fishing for redfish along Louisiana's Gulf Coast is an adventure that should be on every angler's bucket list. The Louisiana Delta is truly a place that fly anglers fall in love with, especially since your guide will be focusing on finding opportunities for you to sight fish. When you get within easy casting distance of a 30-pound redfish that is tailing in inches of water you will not believe your eyes!
The combination of a seemingly unlimited supply of hungry fish and miles and miles of shallow water, make coastal southeast Louisiana one of the best kept secrets in the fly fishing world. On a typical fishing day you will leave the dock at 'safe light' and will find yourself traveling by flats skiff through a maze of bayous, bays and marshes on your way to one of the many fishing locations in the area. After arriving at the first 'honey hole', you will slowly motor or drift along while casting to grass covered points or over one of the many oyster reefs in the area. These waters are full of rod bending redfish, along with other species such as black drum, sheepshead and speckled trout.
Your home away from home while on your Louisiana fishing adventure is located in the deep Mississippi Delta region of Plaquemines Parish, about 65 kilometres (40 miles) southeast of New Orleans. On The Water Fly Fishing Travel
will book you into our favourite accommodations in the area - Woodland Plantation. Situated just 40 minutes south of New Orleans, Woodland and their dining house, Spirits Hall, offer outstanding service and cuisine in a unique setting rich in history, culture and natural beauty. The plantation was originally built in 1834 and has been completely renovated and restored by the current owners. Woodland stands today as the only remaining plantation home in the Delta on the west bank of the Mississippi River. If the main house looks familiar to you, it was once featured on every bottle of Southern Comfort liquor. Spirits Hall was built in 1883 and is a former Catholic Church that was moved to the property, from a neighbouring community, in 1998. The main room of Spirits Hall serves as the dining room. Before dinner join the staff, owner and other guests at the well stocked bar in the front of the main room. Woodland Plantation is operated as a bed and breakfast, however, full meal packages are available.
