Estancia Las Buitreras is situated a short 10-minute walk from the Rio Gallegos river in Argentina. The incomparable Rio Gallegos meanders more than 360 kilometres (224 miles) before it finally reaches the Atlantic Ocean close to the Straight of Magellan. The lodge is home to some of the most prolific waters on the Rio Gallegos, consisting of over 40 kilometres (25 miles) of private water. The main species targeted, from the lodge, are sea run brown trout. The fishing is exciting and varied with pools ranging from deep stony runs to cut banks and streamy shingle flats. It is this variety in combination with the visually inspiring mountainous out crops, that makes this part of the Rio Gallegos quite simply one of the most spectacular stretches of fly fishing water in Patagonia.
Relatively shallow, the river makes for easy wading, reducing the need for fast sinking lines and creating an exciting and challenging fishing environment. Anglers at Las Buitreras primarily use 7 or 8 weight single hand rods or light double hand rods in weight 6, 7 or 8. Floating or slow intermediate lines are the most used and efficient lines. Long casting is not the focus but rather to control the fly and always be ready for the strike. The takes are often violent and these fish really put on a show once they are hooked.
The lodge features six double and two single bedrooms, which are all equipped with private bathrooms and showers for your comfort and convenience. Although the lodge can accommodate up to 14 guests at one time a maximum of only 12 anglers are allowed weekly. This way the lodge can offer rested pools for every guest every session all week. The lodge has a wine cellar with a fantastic selection from the Mendoza and San Juan regions. Outside there is a huge veranda, perfect for the after-fishing beer or glass of wine, a spacious courtyard that is protected from the wind, and a large, field stone grill and terrace for barbeques. Beer and the high-quality house wine is included in the lodge rates. Wi-Fi is available in the lodge from 8:00am to 6:00pm daily. In addition, the lodge has a small shop where you can buy souvenirs and premium quality fly fishing tackle.
