Designed by Florida guide David Mangum this easy to tie pattern has a swimming characteristic unlike any other streamer fly. The tail wiggles from side to side with a slow steady retrieve and will jig up and down when a short fast strip is used. Fish it on a short 5 to 7 foot leader and this fly will fool tarpon, snook, jacks, barracuda and redfish in saltwater and bass, northern pike and trout in freshwater.
With regards to colour combinations, given that the Micro Mini Dragon Tails come in such a wide variety of colours you can really let your imagination go wild. This colour variation is a great stand in for the very successful chartreuse Tarpon Toad.
Materials
Hook: Mustad C68SNP-DT - size 3/0
Thread: UTC Ultra Thread 140 – fl. chartreuse
Foul Guard: 40 lb Mason hard mono
Tail/Body: Micro Mini Dragon Tail – chartreuse
Collar: EP Streamer Brush – chartreuse
Adhesives: Wapsi Fly Tyers Z-ment and Solarez – flex and thin formula
Tying Instructions
Step 1.
. Using a lighter, burn the tip of the tail of the Dragon Tail to add extra durability. After the tip ignites you will have to roll it in your moistened fingers while still hot to fuse the material tighter. Use caution!
Step 2.
Insert the hook in the vise. Attach the thread in the middle of the hook shank and wrap back to the bend of the hook, building up a good thread base. Trim away thread tag.
Step 3.
Tie in an 9 cm long piece of 40 lb Mason hard mono to the top of the hook shank. Starting at the hook bend overwrap the mono to a point at the start of the thread base. Form the free end of the mono into a 3 cm loop extending off the bend of the hook. Wrap the thread back down and then up the hook shank securing the mono and locking down the mono loop.
Step 4.
Return wrap the thread back down the hook shank stopping at the point opposite the barb of the hook. Under wrap the mono loop 12 times (to help prop up the loop) and then coat the thread wraps with Fly Tyers Z-ment.
Step 5. Once the glue has dried, use a fingernail file or fine grit sandpaper to roughen up the center of the mono loop. This will help with adhesion when the tail is glued down.
Step 6.
Tie in the thin front section of the Dragon Tail onto the thread base. Apply Fly Tyers Z-ment along the tail thread wraps. Next apply Solarez – flex formula onto the mono loop along the roughened section. Pull the tail tight onto the mono loop, holding it there while curing the resin with a UV light.
Step 7.Tie in the EP streamer brush collar and then spiral wrap the thread forward to the point behind the hook eye.
Step 8.
Using touching wraps, palmer the EP streamer brush forward to a point two eye lengths behind the eye of the hook (approximately 10-12 wraps). When wrapping the material try and trap as few of the fibres as possible. Tie down the EP streamer brush.
Step 9. Trim away the excess material using side cutters. Build up a small thread head, whip finish and cover all the exposed thread wraps with Solarez - thin.
Your Dragon's Tail is now complete and you are ready to head out
