Alto Paraná Lodge a traditional northern Argentinean tropical estancia located in Corrientes Province on the legendary Paraná River. The river delineates the border between Argentina and Paraguay. The Upper Paraná is a large river system containing dorado, pacú, and pirá pitá which can be caught on the fly. The lodge is situated to provide access to a section of this legendary river and supersized dorados are a possibility anytime. This section of the Paraná River flows clear and is typified by beautiful 'fishy' banks, sand bars, and islands that create deltas and smaller 'riachos' (streams). This location is also the most productive section of the Paraná River for pacú and pirá pitá (both silver and yellow)—pound-for-pound one of the strongest freshwater fish species.
Daily 80 minute flights are available from Buenos Aires’ domestic airport to Posadas, from there it’s just over an hour drive to the lodge. Built in 1800 and recently refurbished, Alto Paraná Lodge is one of the oldest estancias in Corrientes Province. The estancia extends from the Paraná River all the way down to the Iberá Wetlands. The main house has four fully air conditioned single bedrooms, each with a private bathroom and can host up to four anglers and four non-anglers in perfect taste and comfort. There’s also a large living room, a dining area, a fully stocked bar and a fly-tying table. A veranda surrounds the whole house providing a spectacular view of an immense park and the swimming pool. Alto Paraná Lodge does not have a set schedule; therefore, rates for stays from four nights/three days up to seven nights/six days are available. Non-fishing rates are also available.
The fishing program consists of two fishing sessions a day, with a break in the middle to go back to the lodge for lunch and siesta. The fishing times can vary depending on the month and climatic conditions. In terms of tackle, 7 to 9 weight outfits are recommended for dorado and pacú while 5 to 6 weight outfits are the ideal for pirá pitá. All spooled with tropical floating fly lines. The guides recommend 4 to 6 inch streamers tied on 2/0 hooks. Include a few mice imitations, bulky floating attractors tied on 1/0 hooks and some weighted deer hair fruit imitations tied on 1/0 for pirá pitá and 2/0 for pacú in your fly boxes.
